Gnomes or Knees?
Those quirky and mysterious wooden protrusions dotting the landscape are called cypress knees. They stand upright like a congregation of miniature, wooden gnomes holding a silent meeting.
These knees vary in height – some are just tiny stubs, while others might reach the height of a small child, standing there as if waiting for a bus that never comes.
The Congaree NP Boardwalk is like stepping into a forest frozen in a moment of whimsy. You half expect the cypress knees to start moving, perhaps engage in a slow dance or a gentle sway. They add an element of fantasy to the swamp, making you wonder if you’ve walked into a scene from a fairy tale.
Weston Lake. Down where the impertinent piggies roam.
Paddling Ghosts?
For those who love a bit of spookiness, Congaree has its share of ghost stories. Some say that late at night, you can hear the whispers of former inhabitants and the soft paddling of Native American canoes.
Of course, it might just be the wind and the river currents, and two ladies from New Jersey, but where’s the fun in that explanation?
Congaree National Park is a place of awe-inspiring natural beauty, where you can wander among giants and contemplate whether the mosquito should be the state bird.
IF you go in the summer!
But not this day!
